THE BEATLES DISCOGRAPHY Volume One: Stephen E. Donnelly has been involved in PBS and other bastions of solid craftsmanship of the arts and so it would be expected that this volume of all of the recordings and accompanying paraphernalia of the Beatles from the 1960s will be complete. After perusing the catalogue page by page it becomes more a source of nostalgia than historical document - and isn't that just what the Beatles would have wanted?

In many ways this is an art book in addition to being a listing of al the recordings, both singles and albums, the Beatles created. Yes, having a complete list of every title of the works written and performed by this extraordinary group revitalizes the interest in a group of musicians that were to change the world of pop music forever. But the art of their album covers - the variations of the same album as released in the different countries - is very much of that time also. This was the period of the flower children and the over the top fantasies that the new embracing of psychedelic drugs produced. It is all here - if you look closely. Donnelly has done a masterful job of compiling this book and while it really doesn't throw much new light on the subject, it is the memories that the book reincarnates that make it worth adding to the library. "The Beatles Discography: Volume One - The Sixties" is most certainly essential for Beatles collectors. As an all-encompassing anthology of literally every piece of music ever created by or with the Beatles, I guarantee you will find records and tracks you've never heard before.

As a chronological collection, its fascinating to watch the Fab Four's rise to stardom through their album artwork. How many albums can you name before "A Hard Day's Night?" Zero for me. Yet Donnelly has amassed almost 20 pages of pre-1964 records. From controversial cover artwork to motion picture soundtracks, nothing is missing here.

"Volume One" goes into intricate detail of individual track information. If you've ever heard "Sgt. Peppers" you probably are aware of the use of right and left channels in the stereo mix to create some "trippy" effects. Donnelly has taken the time to note which releases were done in mono or stereo; the UK or the US; LP, EP or 45.

If you're looking for a CD of that old album you knew you had somewhere, look no further. In section two, you'll find what songs are available for purchase on CD. You can find the producer for each track, and even which of the Beatles is featured in every individual listing.

From Tony Sheridan to the Plastic Ono Band, you'll find it here. This is the proverbial "Dictionary" of all things "Beatles" in the 1960s. And who knows, maybe that album in your garage is worth a million!
