A great book and a well rounded look at what it means to be a music producer today. This book covers A LOT of territory, so there's really something for everyone, no matter your current level of expertise. What the author does so well is present information that is important, but is frequently overlooked...ideas for sparking your creativity, selecting the proper tools for the situation, and just plain being prepared for each session.

I think what I appreciated most was the author's seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of music and the history of electronic music in the 20th and 21st centuries. He really understands how techniques and processes developed and evolved into the music we hear today. The book really draws a line from early pioneers like Cage to today's artists. I think it's important to understand that and Mr. Jackson clearly knows his stuff in this regard.

The book is well thought out and will inspire the budding producer to think outside the box. This is not your standard "textbook." Rather the information in this book will encourage you to dig deeper as a producer....what inspires you? Where is your music coming from?

As a working musician with little production experience, I this book was helpful in getting the ball rolling for me. I find that when I listen to music now, I pay closer attention to the production. I'm more inquisitive about sounds and how they are created. It's a different way of listening.

I just got it and its a bit thicker than expected but that means there will be more information than expected which is great for me. The more I can learn about the subject the better for me!

Great value in this book! Absolute gem. Comprehensive and clear strategies. A road map for anyone involved in music production. Imagine yourself as a music producer being a tree. This book is the aerial view of the forest.

Bought this book for my son! He can't seem to put it down!

There's nothing in this book about starting an independent business, making contacts, pitching artists or even producing for that matter. The author is an academic who clearly doesn't understand the market for these types of books. People just dont want to read this sort of thing, it's a waste of time especially for all the doers out there who create music, the ones who cant afford to spend it reading some theoretical nonsense on one person's point of view (especially if that person has never really worked in the industry).

If you live in a world of theory (those above who gave positive reviews) and not practice then you may get something out of it. If you're an actual producer then you'll get nothing out of it. I'm an open minded person and give everything a good try but this book was terrible. The author is not an authority on this subject by any means.

If your thinking about Music Producing, a need to have book!

this is a wordy book. for example there are sentences that could have said "lot of styles" that instead list them all. there is also a lot of philosophy in it. there is a lot of history. a lot of evolution covered. this is why i picked it up. it seemed a lot more interesting then some of the regular bonehead cookbooks. but be careful what you wish for i guess. i expected there to be more focus on process. how does a producer's mind work? how do they add energy to the song? change it's moods? get the best out of a performer? it's in there but you have to do some sifting. so, i'm not sorry i read it. i just wish it was edited down a bit to my liking. i feel like i'm learning more about music history and philosophy then making a record.
This is a different kind of book from what you'd normally expect in an ever increasingly computer and tech oriented field. This book won't give you hands on tips for tweaking parameters on your EQ. Instead it's filled to the brim (literally, there's almost no margins at all in this book!) with topics concerning _being_ a music producer and how to navigate a wide array of topics. These include the nature and history of music, planning your career, creativity, how to learn the necessary skills and how to live and work in the music industry.

Now, the most interesting aspect of the book is that most of this is approached in a quite genius way; through integral philosophy and chaos theory. This will force you to really think about the topics even if you have 30 years in the industry and consider yourself to know all there is to know. As noted in another review, this can get quite complicated, at times, but I definitely disagree that the author would be a "bad communicator". Each statement is eventually put in as simple words as possible, and there isn't a topic in the book that I've felt went over my head. Not bad considering english isn't my native language.

There are a few things I feel a bit odd about though, most notably the discussions on drugs in the book. These are dealt with due to the fact that they are a reality in the business, which I can understand and I see the necessity of the discussion. However, I left that discussion not being entirely sure what to make of it. I think the message I eventually extracted from it was "drugs can be dangerous, but they work for some and might help your creative process", which I personally might not be the best of tips to aspiring producers. Don't take my word for it though - read the book, it'll make you think about a lot of things you probably hadn't considered, and decide for yourself.

To sum it up, I find that this book has a higher value than just being a reference book. It'll make you think, not just about music production, but about many aspects of your every day life. That's rare for any book, regardless of topic, in my opinion.
