This book forever changed the way that I look at the celebration of Mass. It goes into detail (sometimes almost painful detail) about the Jewish rituals of the Old Testament, how they foreshadowed the coming of Christ, and how almost all of our Catholic rituals come directly from the Jews or from Christian practice and NOT from paganism.

Reverend James L. Meagher examines how Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles undertook the first Mass, and what His example of Mass means to Christian churches and worshippers. Meagher begins by debunking a common misconception: the idea that the Mass tradition originates from the Last Supper, whereby the eating of bread and wine is symbolic of God’s flesh and blood.

James L Meagher DD, Brother Hermenegild Tosf. Anyone who truly wishes to appreciate the Latin Mass and its origin in the Mass Jesus said at the Last Supper should read this book. It also becomes clear that the Jews of Jesus' time had every reason to convert, when one sees how the Mass fulfills prophecy so well. We are extremely happy to bring this excellent book back into print.

The author spent years mastering Hebrew, and researching the thesis of this remarkable and unique book through the pages of the sixty quarto-sized volumes of the Talmud and in conversation with rabbis in Jerusalem. The author's thesis is that the First and Second Temples, and the Mosaic formulas for ritual and sacrificial worship, were architectural and liturgical embodiments of the Passion of the Christ, the Seven Sacraments, and the Roman Catholic Church. He makes a good argument extending over hundreds of pages.

Like Dr. Michael L. Brown's five-volume work Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus: General and Historical Objections, Vol. 1, and Bishop Bossuet's The Continuity of Religion, this book ties together seeming loose ends between the Old and New Testaments. It is of value to anyone interested in increasing his appreciation of Roman Catholicism, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and Old Testament types. While the book per se is a cheaply bound paperback that may fall apart in your hands by the time you've finished reading, the author's explication of his thesis is something you likely will be hard pressed to find so compactly presented elsewhere. This book truly gives the ancient (not modern) Jewish origin of the authentic TridentineLatin Roman Catholic Mass.
As a former Orthodox Jew who converted to the (pre-Vatican II) Traditional Catholic Faith, I was amazed at the depth of Fr Meagher's
knowledge of Judaism and Jewish rituals! He clearly shows how thoroughly Jewish the Tridentine Latin Mass truly is, unlike the modern novus ordo rite, which is more protestant.

This book makes the Jewish roots of the Catholic faith very clear. In fact one sees that the Catholic faith is not a separate religion , but is the fulfillment in Christ of Judaism. All of this according to exact and detailed instructions from God Himself as revealed to Moses.
