Reviews about About Russia (2):
Folsa
In the early 1970's Cartier-Bresson went on two trips to Russia and, as expected, came back with compelling and wide-ranging images of life in the Soviet republics.

Here's the beginning of his introduction: "I am neither an economist nor a photographer of monuments, and I am not much of a journalest either. What I am trying to do more than anything else is observe life."

Divided into four sections, The Federal Republic of Russia, Estonia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Thus his quiet and beautifully-composed images cover the city and the country and the Slavic and the non-Slavic.

Here's some classic Cartier-Bresson about his work: "I leave it up to those who leaf through these pages to answer the questions the photographs may pose or those that may arise in their minds as they look at them; in other words, the photographs should serve to stimulate the viewer's own reflections." Now there's a statement fully grounded in the photographic traditions of the mid and late 20th century -- traditions, of course, developed and nurtured by Cartier-Bresson's long career.
