Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the most influential fashion photographers of all time. Born in Berlin, he arrived in Australia in 1940 and married June Brunell (. Alice Springs) eight years later.

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the most influential fashion photographers of all time. He first achieved international fame in the 1970's while working principally for French Vogue, and his celebrity and influence grew over the decades. Newton preferred to shoot in streets or interiors, rather than studios. Controversial scenarios, bold lighting, and striking compositions came to form his signature look.

Helmut Newton lived an illustrious life as a fashion photographer, and was also very commercially successful in his lifetime. He ended his life brilliantly- crashing his Cadillac into the famed Chateau Marmont hotel (where he lived). Below are some lessons that Helmut Newton has taught me about photography; lessons you can apply to your photography as well. 1. Create structure and discipline in your work.

Helmut Newton (born Helmut Neustädter; 31 October 1920 – 23 January 2004) was a German-Australian photographer. He was a "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications. Newton was born in Berlin, the son of Klara "Claire" (née Marquis) and Max Neustädter, a button factory owner. His family was Jewish.

Newton’s career and body of work is showcased in stunning fashion in this monumental edition. As others have reported, the print and material quality is exceptional, especially at this reasonable price. The very first thing I noticed is the quality of the dust jacket. Unlike many books of this type, it’s jacket is supremely glossly and thick, like a sheet of glass. Makes for a beautiful and welcoming presentation for the hundreds of breathtaking pages that lay beneath. I was debating between this edition and a pre-owned copy of the massively-sized (and massively-expensive) original printing. This booked is entirely satisfying and effectively scratched my “Helmut Newton” itch at less than 2% of the cost of the larger volume.

Well done, Taschen!

Having seen the original large format version, I was thrilled to find out a smaller tabletop version was produced. This book is gorgeous, the included stand makes it really a true art book worthy of any collection. Its quite hefty and at 450 pages, 12” x 17” his work shows better in many cases than the original large format book. Taschen doesn’t usually have the best printing, but I find the plates and paper used in this book fine, especially for the price. Highly recommended for anyone in love with photography.

A classic book, well printed and presented. Shipped safely with no damage. A big investment but worth it if a fan of the work.

Now that Helmut Newton's Sumo is available for the mass public, and no longer costing $5000+ for a massive podium-sized version, getting a copy is a no-brainer for anyone remotely interested in the king of kink's work. The book is fairly complete in terms of touching all of the major areas of Helmut's work and won't seem too repetitious for owners of previous books. While a lot smaller than the aforementioned original gigantic version, the reprint is still massive in comparison to most other coffee table books. It weights more than 15lbs and comes with a sleek acrylic book stand for display on your favorite shelf, credenza, or table. I was happy with the reproduction quality of the book and the binding seems durable enough for many years of viewing. Highly recommended.

Although I admire good photography work, I don't own so many photography books and collections. But this one has become one of my favorite items that I have ever gotten. I have purchased many things from amazon so far, and I can say that Sumo is the best of them. Its size is amazing (although it originally is made to be 19.7x27.6 inch!), quality of the pictures is very good, and the pictures themselves are extraordinary. Helmut Newton is known to be among the best nude photographers, so if anyone appreciates art and photography, he/she must get this book and spend a considerable amount of time appreciating every shot. For more information you can watch the "Making of Sumo" documentary (linked below), but I must warn you that after watching that documentary you WILL buy the book for sure!

No book collection is complete without this introspection into life through photography. Mostly black and white photography yet the colour photos have a dreaminess to them all of their own.

I used this book as a casual background item in product photography shoots of my own. High fashion editorial that captures a 20th century now firmly in our rear vision mirror.

Exactly what I had hoped for. A comprehensive look into the work of Newton. Some of the photos are quite rare to see. Very happy I bought it. Packaging was excellent, and the stand it came with is a great addition!
This was a surprise gift given to me by my husband. I am so glad Amazon carries Taschen books. I am a big fan. The book arrived in pristine condition. I am a big fan of Helmut Newton, and this does not disappoint. Some well-known photos (Lisa Taylor giving a passing man The Look), as well as some new to me.
