developments in- art, film, literautre, theater, dance, and architecture in the years 1905 to 1925.

The is the first comprehensive publication ever to examine the remarkable interplay of -and parallel developments in- art, film, literautre, theater, dance, and architecture in the years 1905 to 1925. Addressing a disastrous war, a revolution, urban modernity, and the reinvention of the world, this is the first book in which renowned authors, key works, and source texts from all disciplines come together to allow the reader to thoroughly experience the ways in which the various areas of activity mutually influenced each other, as well as the equally dramatic and fascinating fruits of. Expressionism's networks.

First theorized by composer Richard Wagner, the total artwork, or "gesamtkunstwerk," proposed a synthesis of all arts towards a single, unified spectacle. Wagner's ambitious conception flowered in the early twentieth century throughout numerous avant gardes, particularly in German Expressionism, where art forms cross-pollinated and collaborated to a remarkable degree. Past considerations of Expressionism have tended to focus only on individual genres, making The Total Artwork in Expressionism: Art, Film, Literature, Theater, Dance and Architecture 1905-1925 the first-ever publication to examine the interplay between these forms. Here, masterpieces of Expressionist film such as Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari are united with set designs; the works of painters and set designers such as Ernst Barlach, Otto Bartning, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka and Ludwig Meidner are examined, alongside film stills by César Klein and Hans Poelzig; and documents by Bruno Taut and Ernst Toller, music scores by Paul Hindemith, poster art, dance masks and stage photographs provide historical and archival background, building a unique panorama of the Expressionist period. Renowned authors, key works and source texts from all disciplines allow the reader to thoroughly experience the ways the genres mutually influenced each other during this revolutionary period.

Finally.

This is the single book on Expressionism I always wanted -- and I bought just about every one I could find since the 1970s.

Expressionism was far more than just a brief few decades of a certain style in German painting and graphic arts. It involved literature, poetry, drama, stage design, dance, cabaret, poster advertising, periodicals, philosophy, architecture, furniture, and more.

I love the texture and feel of this heavy volume. It covers the Expressionist movement like no other. I'd love to see the exhibit, but having this book is a pleasure. Even the Expressionistic font they chose for the cover and interior headline lettering, the design of the book itself, contributes to that pleasure.

Much of the art is fresh, although if you have as many books on the style as I have, you will have seen some of the photographs and art before. It was less repetitive in that respect than most, and the reproductions are done so well on such fine paper that I never mind seeing a painting or graphic that's in another book.

Much of the text is from primary sources of the time, perfect accompaniment to the art.

The attention to Expressionism in the cinema, on the stage, its intimate look at the total Expressionism created by Kirchner and others are unique.

This book gave me the sense of being there in pre-World War I Germany through the Wiemar Republic. It was the world that gave birth to Einstein, Fritz Lang, Hitler and the Nazis (who famously held an show of Expressionist works in its Decadent Art exhibit then burned everything afterward). Artistically, though, it gave birth to abstract expressionism, many modern styles of graphics and architecture, film noir, and still pervasive styles in poster art, fine art, cinema, theater, and graphics.

A beautiful and deep dive into expressionist art with a great assortment of photos that includes every application of this style, from posters to stage productions to silent films. There's plenty of text that expounds on expressionism's history. I used it as a resource for reports in both art and German language college courses.
