One of the most popular Pre-Raphaelite paintings was John Everett .

One of the most popular Pre-Raphaelite paintings was John Everett Millais' painting "Ophelia" (1851-2), based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood began as a very small group of English painters, poets and critics in the mid-1800s. Early membership totaled only seven members, but the influence that this literary and artistic movement had was immense and long-lasting. In terms of subject matter, the Pre-Raphaelites focused their paintings as well as their poetry on four major subjects: Shakespeare, Dante, Arthurian legend and the Bible.

Artists’ model and Rossetti’s wife Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal not only posed for many Pre-Raphaelite works, but also .

Artists’ model and Rossetti’s wife Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal not only posed for many Pre-Raphaelite works, but also produced them herself. Patronised by Ruskin, she painted, drew and wrote poetry. Proto-aesthetic qualities were also evident in Pre-Raphaelite paintings of the 1870s and 1880s which featured striking, sensual figures in narratively ambiguous situations. Examples include Rossetti’s and Astarte Syriaca (1877) and The Day-Dream (1880) and Burne-Jones’s Laus Veneris (1875) and The Golden Stairs (1880), works which anticipated Symbolist art.

Pre-Raphaelite artists had their own ideas about female beauty, and Janie Morris with her long sad face, large dark eyes and a mass of curly hair was the perfect embodiment of this idea

Pre-Raphaelite artists had their own ideas about female beauty, and Janie Morris with her long sad face, large dark eyes and a mass of curly hair was the perfect embodiment of this idea. The girl studied at a school for servants, in Oxford, where she met William Morris, who fell in love with her, paid for her private education, and later, in 1859, married her. Despite the fact that many artists admired the beauty of Janie Morris, their marriage lasted until the death of her husband, in 1896. Rossetti in his work has repeatedly returned to the theme of Proserpine. This was especially expressed.

This is an essential volume for anyone wanting to learn more about the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their ethos, and offers the opportunity to study their greatest works in one beautiful collection. An excellent overview of the Pre-Raphaelites it gives background information on the movement and the individual artists. Best of all it gives us a wonderful collection of the art. Most pages have several plates on them but the reproduction value is good for that format. If you like this style of art as much as I do, you get the wonderful flowing hair, glorious draped gowns and lovey women in fantastic backgrounds the the movement is known for.

The paintings are beautifully reproduced and the accompanying information is interesting. The typographical errors are jarring.

I disagree with the previous statement that all the pictures in the book are of good quality. Some pictures are oversaturated, greenish or reddish
A richly illustrate book providing some useful information about the life and work of the Pre-Rapahelite artists. Some slight imprecisions
