Helena, MT: Farcountry Press, 2009. 135 pp. Map, illustra-tions, index. Fritz's delinea-tion gives accurate impressions of the majesty of diverse topographies, ranging from the low-slung prairies of Nebraska to the rugged moun-tain chains at the Great Divide. His depictions of the North Dakota winter convey the special quality of light produced only by the frigid still-ness of the High Plains.

Charles Fritz: 100 Paintings Illustrating the Journals of Lewis and Clark unites exquisite Western art with one of our nation's greatest epics. The result of a decade of comprehensive research and on-location painting, this expanded collection of 100 paintings depicts the triumphs and travails of the Corps of Discovery's two-and-a-half-year trek through unknown territory to the Pacific Ocean and back between 1804 and 1806. Although several members of the Corps of Discovery kept journals, an artist did not accompany the expedition. Unlike almost every expedition since, there had been no one to visually document the unique people, landscapes, animals, and plants never before seen by Americans living in the East. With artistry and a passion for historical accuracy, Charles Fritz, one of the nation's most respected Western artists, brings the Journals of Lewis and Clark to life, telling this remarkable American story visually and for the first time allowing us to experience what the Corps saw on their historic journey. Saw this exhibit in person-I was mesmerized by this artists work in person so much that I had to have his book. His paintings are so life like that I actually had my nose almost touching his painting before I could tell it was a painting and not a photograph. I just started taking oil painting lessons less than 8 months ago. I used to find art museums or exhibitions boring; not this one. I am not a western loving artist by any means. This artist's work captured my soul. My art instructor has gone over so many of his paintings with me showing me the different brush strokes he used in various paintings. What a meticulous artist Charles Fritz is. If you get the chance to see an exhibit, run, don't walk. You won't regret it.

Having followed the Lewis and Clark trail, this was a great addition to my book collection. As a lot of the original places have changed now and look nothing like what Lewis and Clark saw, this brings their view to life..

Charles Fritz has given us the one thing Jefferson forgot, a painter traveling with Lewis and Clark. I have been to many of these locations along the route of the Corps of Discovery, and it is obvious that Fritz paid attention to detail, both geographically and historically. It is hard to capture the many moods of the expedition, but Fritz seems to have done this on more than one occasion. The paintings are beautifully reproduced along with interesting commentary by the artist. This is a welcome addition to any Lewis and Clark collection.

Beautiful!
I respect and admire the time, energy, and effort to complete the mission Mr. Fritz set out to accomplish. Reading materials on the Corps of Discovery's expedition allowed me to use my imagination, like one does listening to a radio program. With Mr. Fritz's paintings detail is added to the written words that fueled my imagination.
