The overview of Zuccaro's theory of disegno alone justifies this book. It is inexcusable that Zuccaro's L'idea has not been translated into English.

At first glance this appears to be just a pretentious, and perhaps clunky, treatise of mild academic interest; however, the deeper I read and more I analyzed the contents the more problematic I found it. Williams promises an analysis relevant to 16th century art based on semi-obscure literature of the time, but what you get is more akin to a critic's movie review such as you would find in the Sunday paper. Since the book actually only covers writings about art, rather than the art itself, a more apt analogy would be a critic who is criticizing what others have already written about the movie.
