Themes in Contemporary Art (Art of the Twentieth Century). I purchased this book solely on my experience with Themes in Contemporary Art. Varieties of Modernism is the third book in the series and can easily be read independently from the other books. Extremely well written, this book can be read by the general reader who is simply interested in Modernism, its history, the practices on both sides of the globe, and the issues that have arisen from this art movement. An excellent reference book that is up-to-date and as such, an excellent book for those in the throes of studying Visual Arts.

While I bought this book for a class, I am very pleased with most aspects of it. The contents are comprehensive and help me to get an idea of the advertised themes, which I must be familiar with for a large research project. Most of the essays or chapters are interesting. The cover is a lovely conversation piece. My only negative critique is that the organization could be better executed. Perhaps it cannot be done, but I would like to see greater distinction between different periods of the different art movements.
