Anne Redpath OBE ARA (1895–1965) was a Scottish artist whose vivid domestic still lifes are among her best-known works. She saw a connection between his use of colour and her own. "I do with a spot of red or yellow in a harmony of grey, what my father did in his tweed. The Redpaths moved from Galashiels to Hawick when Anne was about six. After Hawick High School, she went to Edinburgh College of Art in 1913.

Her father Thomas Redpath was a celebrated tweed designer who was recognised both as an innovator and exceptional colourist. Like most of the edinburgh School painters she divided her output between oil and working on paper, valuing each the same. Latterly in her flowers, townscapes and church interiors her treatment of the canvas became more abstract as she abandoned traditional spatial composition.

This is a classic example of the joyous, summery still life work Redpath produced in the Post War period. The pale, neutral background allows her full rein to demonstrate her skills as a colourist, applying pigment generously with brush and knife.
