With its amazingly lengthy and complex history, India (actually the Indian subcontinent) poses a formidable challenge when it comes to composing a book about its great monuments. Rarely do two books on the topic agree, other than on the Taj Mahal. India is brimming with religious temples of all ages and faiths and in all conditions of preservation. Likewise, there is a vast legacy of palaces, forts and other secular monuments. Rather than even attempt to describe all of the great monuments of India (the adjective "great" being open to wide interpretation) this book selects a handful and describes them in sufficient detail so that the average reader will understand both the historical and architectural features of these monuments. The book is liberally filled with excellent color photographs. The net result is an exquisite appetizer of a book, leaving one longing for more.

I've been looking for coffee table books featuring India's architecture for inspiration and information, and this book was perfect. I didn't want a treatise of written information nor did I want a focus on any one period or style. This volume features stunning color photos and goes into enough verbal detail to satisfy including geologic, historical, cultural and geographic information tastefully included. A delightful read that I'll turn to again and again. I wish I could find a few more books like this!
