A down-to-earth approach to sociology Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approachhighlights the sociology of everyday life and its relevance to students' lives. Six central themes help stimulate students' sociological imaginations: a down-to-earth approach, globalization, cultural diversity, critical thinking, the new technology, and the influence of the mass media on our lives.

Overall, this book seems more designed to generate easy multiple choices questions than to teach a messy discipline like sociology. Finally, I found Henslin's chapter on Race and Ethnicity completely unusable. While he does acknowledge the social construction of race, he ignores structural racism in favor of sections on "Prejudice and Discrimination" and "Theories of Prejudice".

I rented this textbook for one of my college classes at PPCC. My college has been requiring students to buy the dreaded custom editions which costs more and are harder to sell. I was told by my professor that only one chapter is missing from this older edition which was fine by me. Ended up asking a friend in class to scan the pages from their textbook. If you are looking to save money on textbooks and don't want to get custom editions, this is a good pick. I enjoyed using this textbook in class I learned a lot of new information that I did not know about. Good diagrams and illustrations to get the point across.

I saved a bunch of money--not by switching to Geico--but by taking advantage of Amazon's Textbook Rental program. College online offers etextbooks but I'm old(er) and I like to physically hold and read books. I can flip back and forth easily for information and when I am taking a 4 hour final, I need quick, visual information that only a real book can provide. Whining aside, $29.00 to rent as opposed to $190.00 to buy is a remarkable deal. Oh, and the book was really good too. I enjoyed reading it.

It's your typical "modern" super-PC generic college textbook. It's colorful and surprisingly low on typos, but still far too long for what it is and exceedingly boring as a result. Book is hardcover and reasonably durable, so it's not a bad candidate for a rental, but even then, it's comically overpriced.

This book saved me 150 dollars by buying it used and one edition back that the school was requesting the 7th edition. I went to the library to compare the two and they were nearly identical, except for two diagrams and the pages in the 6th edition were one number behind the current. All the information was still accurate and was perfect for studying and note taking. If you are not picky about having the current edition and your professor does not demand that it be current, then by all means by this book and any others used in good condition and one edition back and you will save yourself hundreds. Take it from me, once you learn this you will be in a better position to buy other things that are needed for college. Overall this book is perfect if you want to save money and still get the same education from it.

Got this book within a week which is great, its not a bad read for a text book, wish I could actually enjoy it instead of being forced to speed through it. He gives really good examples and includes many different sociologist research and result in a interesting manner, you can tell the author honestly gives a crap. IF YOUR PROFESSOR WANTS YOU TO GET THE 11TH EDITION DO NOT, they are pretty much exactly the same except for a page number differences!! Don't waste your money on the newer $150 when this edition is just as good!

The writing style of the book is casual and friendly. The authors seemed to go out of their way to create a text that was accessible. Throughout the book they speak directly to the reader, have sections on "how to use psychology to learn psychology" and make a point to provide a variety of ways (via mypsychlab) to deliver information. Because they're psychologists, they know that people have different learning styles and they try to help you.

The access code is well worth it. My experience in getting to the mypsychlab was fraught with difficulty and incompetence.
- Access to the audio book of the textbook. This was a huge win for me. It is streaming audio only, which is sad. I would love to be able to listen to it in the car during my commute or while exercising.
- Flash card game. You can select the chapters, you can choose a quiz option, and you can print out the flash cards.YOU CAN PRINT THEM OUT! They even make the game accessible to your smartphone. It's not an app though. It should be an app.
- Study guides. For people who have trouble knowing how to take notes from the book or from lecture, the study guides address this with directed note taking outlines. There are glossary lists for you to look up definitions, chapter quizzes to help you prepare.
- Links to the podcast, which anyone can get to - the psych files.
- access to eText. This is downloadable.

Some complaints:
- The pages of the text are thin.
- The customer service at Pearson was very hit or miss. The third person I reached was able to give me the correct answer, that I needed my professor to provide a course id to me.
- You can't download the audio book.
- The flash card game should be an app.

As you are probably viewing this as it is required reading for a class, I will just say that the quality is good, and there are no issues whatsoever. In the semi unlikely event that you are viewing this as you are interested in a bit of light reading, it's not bad. Some sections are better than others, but very informative and readable, not overly dry as some textbooks tend to be.
Bought this textbook for college, it does a good job of teaching sociology from a decidedly leftist point of view. This is typical of most college textbooks however, and it follows the narrative so I am giving it three stars. If this book could give both sides of even one issue, I would be fine with it but it writes every single chapter to specifically attack Western civilization. On page 159, Henslin compares American treatment of al-Qaeda terrorists to the Holocaust. A paragraph later, describes the beating of a terrorist in Guantanamo, and finishes with the quote "Shades of the Nazis!" The exclamation mark is his, not mine. At least I only had to pay 60 bucks for it, other textbooks can run upwards of 200. If you like Marxist propaganda, this book is for you.
