I hugely enjoyed reading Notebooks from New Guinea, partly because I have visited PNG and experienced firsthand some of the issues discussed, but also for its exploration of many cultural issues that visiting scientists often overlook. If you are the type of person who reads to travel to unique and unvisited places, or to expand your understanding of this world, then I highly recommend this book to you.

Hailed by Edward O. Wilson as "one of the most amazing books I have ever read," this exhilarating volume offers a rare combination of first-rank science and top-notch storytelling. Vojtech Novotny, a world-class researcher and a brilliant writer, works on location in one of the toughest regions of the world--a high-risk locale rife with tropical diseases and venomous wildlife. Moreover, Novotny works closely with the indigenous peoples--natives who still hunt food with spear and arrow--involving them in his research and profiting from their deep familiarity with this rugged landscape. As a result, he has many a fascinating tale to tell, and he is a marvelous storyteller. Indeed, this is an unusual and fascinating collection of almost one hundred brief vignettes, adventurous tales, and reflections that illuminate the native culture and what the West can learn from it. Ably translated by David Short, this delightfully engaging book brings to life--with warmth and wisdom--the place, the people, and the pursuit of knowledge deep in the jungles of New Guinea.

An odd but amusing sense of humor and perspective. This book reminds me of the very wry and sardonic Czech surrealistic animation films we saw in the 60s. Lots of info from the trenches on actually doing fieldwork in modern PNG....Factionalism, violence, cargo cults, medical challenges and problems, the use and impact of modern technology on ecological research in the very isolated boonies, living with malaria, etc. I find this author's perspective on life in upcountry PNG, academics, and the culture of international research very interesting, informative, and enjoyable. If you are not a scientist, anthropologist, or otherwise intersted in ecological research, I'm not sure how you will react. I have lots of "tales from the field' ranging from Geertz to Levi-Strauss to others less famous, but this book is uniquely enjoyable in it's cultural comparisons and incidents recounted.

One of the funniest books I have read. A fascinating collection of observations and reflections by a field biologist working in one of the world's great centres of biodiversity, and just as importantly, cultural richness and diversity. I loved that Novotny leads people down the path of amusement in writing about, while not disparaging local cultural practices, before bringing readers back to earth by showing how similarly bizarre and sometimes even more preposterous Western cultural practices and belief systems often are, or can be appreciated to be if one is prepared to stand back and walk outside of one's own shoes. The only small gripe, though I completely forgive this given the enjoyment of this read, is that the Kindle/ebook version appears to have been scanned from hard copy with a few word rendition errors along the way.

This is among the most entertaining science books I've read. We owe a lot to the translator as well as the author. I often open this book to reread bits because wherever it falls open, I find something worthwhile. It purports to be about the New Guinea culture, but observations about our western culture, and the culture of scientists specifically, are made in the exact same manner! Novotny's tongue-in-cheek style is great fun, and illuminating.

I am not a biologist, and this book is not primarily related to biology. Instead, it is a biologist's musings on the curiosities of life in New Guinea. If you are the type of person who reads to travel to unique and unvisited places, or to expand your understanding of this world, then I highly recommend this book to you. Mr. Novotny is incredibly is so easy to relate to, that the reader feels like he is having a beer with an old friend about his experiences in an exotic place. It is a fast read that you wish wouldn't end.

My husband and I both enjoyed this wonderful book about PNG. Having been there we could relate our experiences to some of his accounts. It would also be a great read and give an insight into another culture/s for anyone who hasn't been there. Not stuffy or pedantic.

The book is very funny and translation from Czech is good. The author applied cultural relativism to show how absurd can also be some rituals in so called civilized countries. Malaria is not so funny, but it is a part of life in tropical regions.

A lot of truth about the intensity of life in PNG.
A Czech scientist's time in New Guinea. That may sound dull, but this is an interesting book. It's about equal parts his experience, about Czechs, about how things work in New Guinea, about nature and doing tropical nature. It's translated well, as far as I can tell. There are a few of what appear to be insider jokes referring to being Czech, but they are somehow interesting. The book is more a rambly pastiche than methodical but I found it oddly compelling. Novotny would be an interesting fellow to have a couple of beers with, if this book is any indication
