This classic study by Henri Lefebvre "raises the question whether today we must study Marx as we study Plato, or rather whether Marx's work retains a contemporary value and significance; in other words, whether his work contributes to an elucidation of the contemporary world. For Lefebvre, Marx's thought remains a key-perhaps even the key-to an understanding of modern societies and modern reality.

In 1961, Lefebvre became professor of sociology at the University of Strasbourg, before joining the faculty at the new university at Nanterre in 1965. He was one of the most respected professors, and he had influenced and analysed the May 1968 student revolt. Following the publication of this book, Lefebvre wrote several influential works on cities, urbanism, and space, including The Production of Space (1974), which became one of the most influential and heavily cited works of urban theory.

Lefebvre argues that Marx was not a sociologist, not an economist, not yet an historian or a philosopher. On the other hand, one can find in his writings a sociology, a political economy, a theory of history, and significant intimations of a philosophy. The explanation of this apparent paradox lies in the fact that Marx was writing in a period prior to the compartmentalizing of science, when the nature of things could still be grasped as a whole.
