Colossus" is more than just the story of Hoover Dam. It begins decades before anyone even thought of damming the Colorado. For example, many people may not know that the Salton Sea, California's largest body of water, was not "always there. He was fascinating and I found his book the same. I will use the word "inspirational" as his talk and my reading of Colossus inspired me to explore the lower Colorado.

Yet the story of Hoover Dam has a darker side. Its construction was a gargantuan engineering feat achieved at great human cost, its progress marred by the abuse of a desperate labor force. Pulitzer Prize–winning writer Michael Hiltzik uses the saga of the dam’s conception, design, and construction to tell the broader story of America’s efforts to come to grips with titanic social, economic, and natural forces. GREAT BOOK. If you like details, this is it. I have been interested in the Hoover Dam since I first saw it in 1977 and have always kept an eye out for books and videos on how it was built. THIS IS THE BEST I have found in 35+ years. Buy it you will not regret. Even if you just look at the photos, there are lots of detailed shots.

This is a must read book and he goes into great historical detail from the crazy Colorado river before taming it to the awesome history of the dam and surrounding areas. I would highly recommend this for history buffs and to anyone who wants to learn about our awesome nation and its growth.

For anyone who is interested in the Hoover Dam this book is great! It does have engineering type detail in all the construction. At times it is a slow read, but well worth the investment.
