This book is a wonderful gift for someone dealing with cancer. A diagnosis of cancer was quite a bewildering experience for me even though as a biochemist I could understand what it meant. After the diagnosis, I felt that I had surrendered the control of my life to the doctors and the prescribed treatment The author’s Integration of the experience with cancer with forms and structures of music informs us once again how our lives are interwoven into the tapestry of human existence. Not only does Dr. Nagarsheth give a treasure trove of straight forward medical explanations for cancer and the treatment procedures, but also guidelines using musical analogies to deal with the process to help cope with the whole process. The theme that we are in this together and we need to listen to each other so that we can stay together and that life will go on is interwoven throughout the book. A few metaphors that I especially liked were - the comparison of “sight reading” with the initial experience of receiving a diagnosis of cancer and keeping up your “repertoire” of daily activities. I especially liked the metaphor of the wood block and keeping your own rhythm. There are so many good metaphors in the book that it was hard to choose a favorite. As I read this book, I felt that Dr. Nagarsheth was speaking directly to my experience and to my concerns. It was like what happens in music – right to the heart without all of the filters. I wasn’t going to just “make” it but that I was empowered to live passionately the rest of my life. We are fortunate that Dr. Nagarsheth learned his music lessons well from Professor Latimer and shared his gift to integrate music with his medical practice.

Dr. Nagarsheth along with his companions does a marvelous job in articulating the connections between music and medicine. It is a book that is easily approachable by anyone with an interest in music or medicine and provides a strong foundation in the process. As a musician and medical student I've known many of the concepts Dr. Nagarsheth talks about but he organizes and presents the information in a way that makes it strikingly clear. One of the brilliant analogies he presents ties the process of sight reading to that of reacting to a new diagnosis of cancer. You don't know what's ahead of you and it's easy to panic by taking too much in at once, but by having a methodological process by which to react, something foreign isn't as startling. The subtitle of the book is a prescription for healing and I think this book does a good in giving people direction in the maze of medicine. I would recommend this to anyone struggling with cancer. Furthermore I would recommend it to anyone in the healthcare professions as well as those with an interest in music. It's a book that provides positive optimism in a uniquely interdisciplinary fashion.

This is a wonderful book. Very powerful and educational. The author inspires you to think about the quality of life and encourages you to move forward towards reality being positive. I personally liked his way of thinking a lot. His writings and expressions are very convincing. It helps me tremendously to strive to make things better in my life. As a profession in classic music, I loved his musical application for healing. As many know, music therapy is actually used in cancer treatment to help reduce anxiety, pain, and other symptoms caused by chemotherapy etc. The author tells you "how" in his artistic way. Music obviously has power to change people's life. One more thing, this book is filled with the author's love and his devotion to his patients. It was really touching to me. He must be a great doctor.

Nice, but could be better. It covers a limited side of the topic. There are better ones on the market.

Obviously this is a book some people like a lot, so your mileage may vary. but I really didn't care for it.

I don't have cancer (happily), but I have been very impressed with Oliver Sachs' accounts of how people in difficult circumstances use music to function. I expected some insight on making music a more important and helpful part of life.

Instead the book is kind of abstract with many comparisons between having cancer and making music and some specific reflections on a particular band and songs written. If you aren't too musical to start with (and I'm not), you may be like me and not resonate with this book at all.

I'll recycle the book and maybe someone will get it to whom it will be more helpful.

What does music have in common with cancer? Plenty. Dr. Nagarsheth explains how music, particularly his percussion instruments. Besides being an oncologist, he is a musician. It's easy to relate to the way he compares his knowledge of both of his expertise. As a two-time cancer survivor with my own recipe for healing, I can tell you that music soothed my soul when I was going through cancer. I also purchased the music CD by N.E.D. the band and you can see how he practices what he preaches.
