Sources of Western Tradition, Volume 1 (8th, 12) by Perry, Marvin. I purchased it for use in a Humanities Course, but the primary source material has been useful in many different classes. I have used it in Composition, Philosophy, History, and even to tie some things together in Biology. The book does contain excellent primary source material. However, Perry's introductions are very insightful.

The book is clear, comprehensive and relatively readable. I think it does a particularly effective job of drawing out ideas and institutions in each period it covers that ultimately help shape the Western tradition. My main criticism of the book is that it tries to do too much - my students were overwhelmed with information.

I had read excerpts from previous editions of the Sources of Western Tradition, but I am extremely glad I purchased this book. I purchased it for use in a Humanities Course, but the primary source material has been useful in many different classes. However, Perry's introductions are very insightful. This is one of those textbooks that is worth keeping when the class is over.

the book itself is good - if you are looking for the next edition because of a requirement for class, this book isn't too far off. Page numbers are a bit different and there are a FEW selections that are not in this edition that are in the next one. But you will survive the class.

It has a lot of great raw sources from which to choose when researching Western history up until the Enlightenment period. I will definitely be using this book when researching Western history.
