Reviews about African-American Odyssey, The, Combined Volume (5th Edition) (7):
Jeronashe
This is a text book but the slavery subject has clearly been sanitized in language to appease those who might be offended by the subject. A example of this is under the caption of "African Women on Slave Ships", exact language "African women did not enjoy the same protection against unwanted sexual attention from European men that European women received." CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? This is the manner in which this text conveys how African women were repeatedly raped and demoralized during the Middle Passage.

I was reminded that this is a text book and has to be politically acceptable to be a text book. Oh well. Even the title distressing me. The definition of Odyssey is to have an adventure. I don't think I can look upon African Americans since their arrival to the Americas as "an adventure" but who am I to question.

There is however some very good history information about other events that occurred in the lives of African Americans in these United States.

Very good information in this book. It is a text book.
There are detail is some subjects, but like most text books
it indicates or mentions a incident or notable fact with brief
summary instead of giving great details of a incident in history.
Thorgahuginn
Albeit this is a fairly expensive book, it is an excellent survey of the history, trials and tribulations of Africans, who mostly came to the New World involuntarily, and their descendants. It also showcases many folks, generally ignored in American history, who had significant roles in the history of the United States.

This book is absolutely wonderful. It's excellently written and I could absolutely recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about African-American History. I bought this book for one of my classes and kept it after the class was over.
Well written, easy to understand and very informative. The CD accompanying the book is excellent as well.
