Discipline problems challenge most new teachers and even some veteran educators. Good classroom management combined with an effective discipline plan helps keep bad behavior to a minimum so the entire class can focus on learning. For example, if you tell your students to open their books to page 51, but three students are so busy talking with each other that they do not hear you, resist the urge to yell. If a fight breaks out in the classroom, follow your school's rules concerning teacher involvement as many administrators want teachers to stay out of fights until help arrives. Keep an anecdotal record of major issues that arise in your class.

The reason I think this is a great book is that it gives instruction on the second lesson plan and methods for having positive interactions.

Teachers really have to prepare two lessons plans. One is the content plan and the other is the discipline plan. This book covers the discipline plan.

Mainly, the newer research is showing that we achieve a great deal more as teachers (and also parents and managers) when we spend our time and effort paying attention to the good/desired behaviors. We should call out those positive behaviors and spend time reinforcing them. We easily fall into attending to the negative behaviors and that is an awful trap.

I believe that many if not all teachers will benefit from the chapters in this book. In fact, I think all adults would equally benefit.

I had seen Randy Sprick present at a conference, and I thought his methods sounded a little too immature for high school. I was wrong. His method works. I read the book over the summer, set up the implementation before school started, presented it to the students the first week, and reinforced throughout the year. I wrote only two referrals the whole year, and those were for really serious hallway infractions, not stuff in my class. The use of positive statements with students really does work. Parent contact is important too.

Some good stuff in here, but very little was new to me. (I'm a veteran teacher of at-risk kids though, so.) For a newer teacher, it would be valuable. Excessive (as always) charting suggestions. No need for new though! But it used!

I taught High School for the first time and I have to say this was an excellent resource for me. I needed all the help I could get and this helped me and my 7 classes with 35 students in each! Great, great book!

This is a classic. Thought provoking and provides many tools that are essential to know when you work with students in high school. I would say that it is one of the best books on discipline and classroom management and worth every penny that you might spend. I would recommend buying this book and it should cover most of your needs for classroom management in high school.
