The story starts with the year the Smeetons spent in Japan, after a long voyage in the Tzu Hang from South Africa. They wintered in the northern island of Hokkaido then sailed for the Aleutians which form a bridge between Asia and America. Eventually, they sail through the Panama Canal, up the east coast of North America and to Ireland.

Sailor Miles Smeeton records an entry in his book Misty Islands of an encounter with an animal while sailing in the Aleutian Islands in 1969. His description is remarkably similar to Steller's. It was seen by Smeeton, his daughter and a friend

In short this is an accounting of a sailing trip from Japan to Ireland. The Misty Islands is clearly a book of the sea and of adventure; it is also a tale of people, places and living creatures in some of the least known parts of the world. This book was written in the cabin of the Tzu Hang, partly during a winter spent in Southern Ireland after the voyage it describes.

Miles Smeeton has turned out to be one of the best voyaging writers, and he writes of sailing a wooden ketch all over the world with his wife Beryl, who is also an adventurer. Details of sailing conditions, routes chosen, official protocols of half century ago, and all written in great stylve.

British Brigadier Miles Smeeton, retired, of British Columbia, and his wife, Beryl, have a yacht, Tzu Hang, in which they have cruised the world.

These are real people, and a real boat, and they have real adventures. I first met them in their book, 'Once is Enough,' wherein they were pitchpoled, rolled over, dismasted and very nearly swamped by a following rogue wave in the 'roaring forties' between Australia and the South American coast, to which they went on a jury rig for repairs.

In this book, the Smeeton's describe how they sailed to Japan to return the Samurai sword of a Japanese officer from whom Smeeton had accepted surrender during the Second World War.

A Samurai sword is an object of almost spiritual reverence to the Japanese, held for generations in a family, and of inestimable value. So, General Smeeton wanted to return it--a matter of honor.

Which he did, successfully, to an overwhelmed and very grateful Japanese gentleman.

The book describes their stay in Japan, and especially a place called Mori, where they wintered their boat, hauling her out, stripping her of her rigging, unstepping her masts, and refinishing her bottom.

The book is replete with details of Japan and its people, the friendships that the Smeetons made, and some misunderstandings resulting from cultural differences, some of which are quite amusing.

This is a book primarily of interest, perhaps, to other cruising sailors, but I think it will also please those with an enduring curiosity about other cultures and places.

If you can get hold of a copy, I think you will enjoy it. I certainly did.
