An extraordinarily comprehensive and lucid study of the variety and evolution of the Renaissance Bibles and their translations and the significance of their impact on inter-religious understanding as well as conflicts.

This book broaches some issues of Erasmus' ideas on biblical interpretation that get short shrift normally. His emphasis on trying to grasp the original context and audience for the meaning of utterances (especially those of Jesus) somehow STILL seems very radical and typically gets lefts out. Or conveniently brushed under the carpet. Also I love that the discussion indicates and even mentions with a bit of dry humor, the "Erastian Erasmian" sense, which has been so slippery for scholars, and so likely to be ignored by many less sensitive scholars of ideas and letters. This has surely contributed to the short shrift the Erastian Erasmian sense has gotten in Western history, to our great detriment.
