The narrative power of Whitfield Lovell's work is illuminated via beauty and wit, but not without the conflict, pain, and contradiction that make his impassioned imagery of interpersonal relationships and history all the more true to life. Lorna Simpson, Artist. There is a dignity to Lovell's which makes it all the more compelling. There is a lovely democratic feel to his work, the sense that it is for all of us to se. - John Yau, Art Critic, from his catalogue essay for"The Bronx Celebrates Whitfield Lovell", 1993

Using vintage photography as his source, Lovell often pairs his subjects with found objects, evoking personal memories, ancestral connections, and the collective American past.

Whitfield Lovell is an American Postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1959.

Inspired by the forced removal of a thriving African American community in 1921 because of fears about its proximity to a women's college in Denton, Texas, Lovell, in 2000 in an exhibition titled "Whispers From the Walls", built at The Studio Museum in Harlem an intimate environment with layered voices, artifacts, portraits, and sounds.

Reviews about Whitfield Lovell: Portrayals (2):
Authis
"Artist Whitfield Lovell uses his personal archive of late nineteenth and early twentieth century studio photographs of African Americans as the basis for his charcoal drawings on wood. Paying close attention to the grain and texture of the wood as well as to any remnants of color from paint or wallpaper, the artist adds found objects, creating a three-dimensional work that brings strangers from the past directly into the viewer's world.
