Since I knew the author personally over many years, I would have to verify that almost all of the experiences expressed by the first-person narrator in this riveting tragic tale actually happened to the real "Jack Challenge". This was the author 's only novel. I believe it served him well as a catharsis or self-healing pouring out of just what tragedies were endured in the 1950's by the gay men in society. I am sorry my friend didn't survive long enough to enjoy the freedom that came later. He did, however, leave his own story behind buried well under a pseudonym. Farewell dear friend.

I read this novel when it first came out and it has haunted me ever since, across the years. Just now, I closed my old copy of St. Mick after finishing re-reading it for the first time since 1981, after a long life of rich and varied experiences ranging from the dark ages of the fifties and sixties, of which Challenge writes, through the actual night of the Stonewall riots of June 28, 1969 and on up the the present age of my legal same-sex marriage. The book is a spellbinding novel, beautifully written and deeply, richly lived. It is unsurpassed as a "coming out and coming of age" saga and a fascinating, every-surprising story. it surely ranks with the greatest documents of the gay experience, then and now. I recommend it highly and wish that I could know more about its author. But I believe that nearly everything there is to know about "Jack Challenge" is caught between these mesmerizing, enlightening, funny and terrifying pages. While fanciful and imaginative in its imagery, it also rings completely true. It makes Call Me By Your Name seem like a quaint Hans Christian Andersen tale.
