André Nicolaevitch Grabar was born in the Ukraine on July 26, 1896, at Kiev (at that time part of the Russian Empire). He was educated in Kiev and at first thought of becoming an artist, joining the studio of a Kiev painter on leaving school From 1937 to 1958 he became the center of a school of young art historians, as a Director of Studies in Christian Archaeology at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (1937-1946) and as a professor at the Collège de France (1946-1958).

Andre Grabar, an internationally known expert on Byzantine art, died on Friday at his home in Paris. He was 94 years old. He died of cardiac arrest, said his son, Prof. Other books by Dr. Grabar include ''The Emperor in Byzantine Art,'' ''Martyrium,'' ''Byzantine Sculptures of Constantinople'' and ''Romanesque Painting: From the 11th to the 13th Century. He wrote in French, and his books were translated into English, German, Italian and Spanish. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to his son Oleg, of Princeton, . he is survived his son Nicolas, of Paris; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
