Hammarskjold truly helped to build the United Nations into what that great institution is today. He was the second Secretary General, but the first to design the job, by traveling around the world to meet with many national leaders, by developing the U.N. peacekeeping programs, by struggling to bring peace to Palestine, by standing up to both Khrushchev and right-wing American politicians. He was strong, and he was a visionary.

This book is beautifully written by Brian Urquhart, who worked with Hammarskjold during the full eight years, 1953-1961.

Sir Brian Urquhart has written an insightful and personal biography of Hammarskjold, a man whom he worked with for years in the United Nations. Urquhart has seen the depth of Hammarskjold's character and vision and after Hammarskjold's death in 1961, Sir Brian Urquhart has portrayed the former Secretary General of the UN during some of the organization's most difficult moments as the visionary he truly was. A great read for anyone interested in discovering a truly great man of our times.
