Peer's Curfewed Night is an extraordinary memoir that does a great deal to bring the Kashmir conflict out of the realm of political rhetoric .

Peer's Curfewed Night is an extraordinary memoir that does a great deal to bring the Kashmir conflict out of the realm of political rhetoric between India and Pakistan and into the lives of Kashmiris. Peer was only 13 in 1990 when Indian troops fired on pro-independence Kashmiris and, as he puts it, "the war of my adolescence started". It is the book of Basharat's Peer experiences, yes, but those experiences include returning to Kashmir and seeking out the stories of others affected by the conflict. It is a formidable challenge to tell the stories of Kashmir's suffering without numbing the readers' senses, and that Peer is able to do so is testament to his gifts and sensitivity as a writer.

I was curious to read Curfewed Night after watching Haider and it was a really fulfilling read. There is so much one reads about Kashmir but in the din the people just get hidden and that is what Basharat does really well; he brings out the thoughts and souls of simple people entangled in big complicated things which ultimately has made life in Kashmir quite a challenge. Basharat's writing and descriptions are really vivid and it brings alive the village activities, the frustration of a generation. He is deeply empathic towards his subjects and I think this is a must read for anyone interested in reading good writing.

I feel that Basharat peer is telling only one side story which is basically problem faced by Kashmiri's due to Pakistan's Kashmir conflict. I feel that he should need to tell more that the politics, corruption and the problems faced by the Kashmiri Pandits.
