Learning a language has always been an exercise in futility to me. For some reason universities insist students learn another language in addition to English. I went through three German textbooks in two years trying to learn German and not learning anything. This text book was praised by the teacher with whom I took intermediate German at a state university. He clearly did not like Assoziationen Deutsch fur die Mittelstufe, having us instead buy Fokus Deutsch intermediate German. He thought it was wonderful. This book is designed to be used in conjunction with a video course. It boasts that their approach offers transition for using the textbook and the video series. The textbook features a unique clear and user friendly organization. The books enables a maximum flexibility for learning German. It develops a German studies approach in which it teaches language while covering a wide array of cultural and historical topics from many different perspectives. Topics include everyday life, family, work, and daily routines to political and social issues that affect Germans today. Each chapter has sections on vocabulary, grammar structure, , perspectives, with insights into cultural points, sections on listening skills with narratives, interviews, and other types of listening passages, and their cultural projects for each chapter. There are notes offering practical insights into the similarities between English and German. Then there are sections to help develop listening, reading and writing skills.
The textbook is focused on the conversational level of German, so there is more emphasis on speaking than writing or reading German. It is mainly linked to the video series, also a website linked to the course. All this is fine for those with a talk for speaking, but I personally never got anything out of it.

The item arrived on time and as described. There were even a few notes on notebook paper left in the book, which was fun to look at because it's like a little peak into the previous owner's experiences with the text. Thanks so much.

This book is all right if it is required for a class. It is broken up into chapters, and each chapter has three different learning objectives -- vocabulary, grammar, and culture. This is decently effective, although the exercises are extremely formulaic. (An example sentence is given, and the student re-arranges the practice sentences in the same manner. To me, this just shows that they can follow an example and doesn't mean that they'll be able to execute it properly in writing or speech.)

However, as soon as the class is over, this book is obsolete. The organization is not logical and it makes for a poor reference book. There are many other great German reference books that cost less, contain more information, and are better organized.

This is a perfect companion, if you could buy the tearchers part of this. For obvious reasons, it's not immediately available to anyone; but, if you want to get this. Know a teacher, and get that too! I don't recommend you get it without the teachers book.
