Dark family secrets can be murder. Married to an ambitious but feckless architect and living in the pretentious show home they can ill afford, Jane is forced to return to work, leaving her children in the care of a less than reassuring childminder.

Died on a Rainy Sunday book. Aiken is a modest but talented author. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as your first Aiken book though. Jul 22, 2010 Bcoghill Coghill rated it really liked it.

The youngest miss ward. The haunting of lamb house. Return to harken house. Give yourself a fright.

A thriller by Joan Aiken is like an ice cream cone. Or to reveal what goes on in the finale of Died on a Rainy Sunday. Joan Aiken's triumph with this genre is simply that she does it so much better than most other practitioners. Both must be consumed at a single sitting and both leave a cold but pleasurable feeling in the pit of the stomach. Consider the situation of Jane Drummond, wife of a successful architect, mother of two, former film writer, just moved into a beautiful modem house in rural Kent. In this case, there is the added attraction of an intelligent, selfquestioning heroine, rather than the ninny so often encountered in Modern Gothic.

Reviews about Died on a rainy Sunday (3):

This book started off very well. The plot is quite suspenseful, and there were some cliffhangers at the end of some chapters, but it kind of fizzled. It is a quick read. Yes, read and enjoy, but do not expect a wild ending.
Small Black
A tiny book set in an almost mundane setting. It is hard to believe it was published in 1972 as it seems so much like today. The suspense is wonderful and the out come is shocking and surprising without the blood and gore we expect today. Aiken is such a great and consistent writer.
FEISKO
Joan Aiken's "Died on a rainy sunday" was quite boring, and thankfully brief. It's about Jane Drummond and the malice that the McGregors who live in the nearby weir nurse towards her and her husband, Graham. Long-hidden and dark secrets are revealed, but the characters are just not that interesting at all.
