Prior to the Norman Conquest the settlement was owned by a man named Merleswein. Just outside the village is what was the old manor of Bagtor which dates back to Conquest times when it was granted to the chief balister (crossbowman?) called Nicholas.

The beautiful village of r lies between green fields and high, moorland hills in a sheltered valley on the East side of Dartmoor. 2020-Tuesday 8th September, Widecombe Village Green and Fair Field. Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome! Entrance to the Fair is FREE.

She has been a resident of the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township, New Jersey.
