A Gleam in the North" is about Ewen's cousin Archibald Cameron (now one of the most wanted men in Scotland) trying to help get another rising going . But the general staid writing style of . Broster drags it down. There is no doubt that "The Dark Mile" is the best of the bunch.

A Gleam in the North" is about Ewen's cousin Archibald Cameron (now one of the most wanted men in Scotland) trying to help get another rising going, and Ewen and his brother-in-law Hector Grant trying to help him. Plus there's the whole issue with the French gold and people betraying their own people.

Set during the 1745 Jacobite uprising under Bonnie Prince Charlie, D. Broster’s The Gleam of the North is the second of the Jacobite Trilogy. It follows on from the first instalment, in which the intersecting fortunes of two men, who at first glance seem almost complete opposites, are at the centre of the story. Ewen Cameron, a young Highland laird in the service of the Prince, is dashing, sincere, and idealistic, while Major Keith Windham, a professional soldier in the opposing English army, is cynical, world-weary, and profoundly lonely.

Reviews about Gleam in the North (New Windmills) (2):

The book was described as being in good condition and so it is. Matches the first and third books that we had but were missing the second in the trilogy. Thrilled to have it. Came as promised as well - within 2 days of the first promised date.
GODMAX
This book was written years ago and is a clean read…if you don’t count the bloody battles. I had a little difficulty with the language but it does not take away from the story. This is a story of 2 unlikely friends. I laughed some. I cried some gut-wrenching tears. The ending was surprising but I was not disappointed. I HIGHLY recommend it to lovers of Scotland and the struggles experienced. It helps to know the history just a little - just so you can keep the order straight. It will teach you history. The background setting has a little bit of fairy dust in it. I am taking a short break and then jumping into book 2.
I read the Kindle edition.
