Possibly the first mention of the town was in 673 AD: the first synod of a number of the bishops in England was held either in Hertford or at Hartford, Cambridgeshire. It was called by Theodore of Tarsus; decisions included the calculation of the date of Easter. By the time of the Domesday Book, Hertford had two churches, two markets and three mills. The Parliament of England temporarily moved to Hertford during a plague outbreak in London in 1563. This is why the main square in the town, Parliament Square, is so named, although it is a twentieth-century creation.

The Shire Hall is a municipal building in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building. Although a team of Robert Adam and his younger brother James Adam were selected to design the building, James took charge. It was originally used to accommodate the assembly rooms and courts for the county. It also housed the town's corn exchange until the mid-nineteenth century.

The titles of Earl of Hertford and Marquess of Hertford have been created several times in the peerages of England and Great Britain. The third Earldom of Hertford was created in 1559 for Edward Seymour, who was simultaneously created Baron Beauchamp of Hache. His grandson William Seymour was subsequently created Marquess of Hertford and restored to the title of Duke of Somerset; the Marquessate became extinct in 1675 and the other three titles in 1750.
