This is probably the best introduction to the life of Aleister Crowley, the self styled Great Beast who intended to overthrow the existing religions and replace them with his own. Why Crowley chose Symonds as his literary executor is somewhat puzzling; he had only known Crowley for a year or two and was not a disciple. But Symond's lack of faith in Crowley's divinity makes him an excellent biographer. Although he explains Crowley's thought and rituals, the faint atmosphere of skepticism with which he describes them helps keep the reader grounded in situations where he or she might otherwise find themselves baffled. I am not an admirer of Crowley's although there are countless books by very intelligent and eloquent people who are. My objection to Crowley is that, if he was such a brilliant magician, why did his life turn out such a wreck? He wasn't able to avoid death. He spent a good part of his life living on other peoples' money. His shellfishness and lack of empathy were appalling, even by today's standards. He spent his final years in poverty, injecting, as one biographer put it, "enough heroin every day to kill a room full of people." There are many books that provide good counter arguments to the things that make Crowley seem to me to be such a failure as a human being and those that disagree with me will have no trouble finding them. This IS a riveting book. Crowley has become an important figure in the period of the 1800s-1900s, and this is an excellent place to start looking if you're wondering what all the noise is about.

I recommend any and all of the books about Aleister Crowley by Symonds. The impact of Crowely on today's society is important for everyone to understand, whether you are a devotee of Crowley or especially if you are not. Do "pay attention to the man behind the curtain". If you are a student of the connection to the occult and Nazi Germany, it is worth noting that the O.T.O., the organization which Crowely became the head of in 1927 was not founded by Crowely but by Carl Kellner, a high ranking German freemason. Other members of "the great white brotherhood" include Theodor Ruess, a German spy. Crowely announced in his publication of the Equinox, with the subtitle "The Review of Scientific Illuminism" that the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) holds the wisdom of The Order of the Illuminati. The Illuminati, founded in 1776 by Adam Weishupt, was a criminal underground using the rites of the freemasons as their secret code.

excellent book on the life of someone who sold their soul to evil and used everyone around him financially, sexually, emotionally and all ways conceivable. Aleister through his fleeting powers ultimately destroyed all he used and in the end died a broken lonely powerless junkie as he sold his soul to the great liar.
