Japanese POW 81A was a pure-bred liver-and-white English pointer called Judy - the only dog officially recognised as a Prisoner of War in World War II and viewed as a guardian angel and symbol of hope and courage for thousands of Allied troops imprisoned and tortured by the Japanese in the Far East.

Judy (1936 – 17 February 1950) was a ship's dog on board HMS Gnat and HMS Grasshopper stationed on the Yangtze before and during World War II. She proved able to hear incoming aircraft. She proved able to hear incoming aircraft, providing the crew with an early warning. After part of the crew transferred from the Gnat to the Grasshopper in June 1939 the ship was sent to Singapore after the British declaration of war on Germany.

This is the "original" story about Judy, the pointer who was adopted as a puppy by the Royal Navy, and who was a prisoner of war of the Japanese where she was adopted by a British airman, Frank. It was astounding what Judy did to help the men she served with. And it was amazing what Frank did to keep Judy safe. They both survived the war. Other books about Judy provide more details of her life but this is the original one published in 1972 by the men who served with her; they wanted to make sure her story was told. And they told it well. I bought a copy even though I own two other books on Judy. (The paperback book has a photo of a pointer on the front but it's not Judy; the hardbound cover has a photo of Judy.)

Nice and easy to read. It is straight forward. Other Judy's books have a lot of info that are totally unrelated to Judy. They provide good read and give you good info for WW2. However, if you just want to learn about Judy only then this is the one.

This is the 3rd book on Judy that I own and the most treasured - as it is told by her own comrades in arms and fellow POW survivors. It inspired me to go to Find a Grave and sponsor her memorial page. This dog for sure went to Heaven . . .
