Eric Berne's best seller "Games People Play" brought the ideas of transactional analysis to the attention of millions of readers, but it wasn't until after his death in 1971 when some of his followers summarized the gist of his theories, that the entire edifice of his innovative approach to mental health emerged in the public mind. The reason for this was that Berne, a prolific writer, evolved transactional analysis over many years and book by book, each new work taking his theories another step along the road. Each of these books became a classic in its field, but none brought together in one volume the entire range of his ideas. Yet few will dispute that Berne was a better writer by far than any of those who followed in his footsteps; his pungent wit, his fresh and irreverent approach, and the ease with which he carried his scholarship have remained unmatched.

A classic - Berne, one of the enfants terrible of psychology in the 1960s and 1970s, created a framework of psychological understanding based on unpretentious terminology for interpersonal transactions stemming from intrapersonal entities - and for several years, his school of Transactional Analysis gained clinical and popular adherents. Geared toward brief therapy with patients taking much of the responsibility for understanding simple but key concepts of interpersonal relationships, TA also foreshadowed parts of Family Systems psychological philosophy (which is to say that someone familiar with Bowen Systems Theory, for example, will see some familiar concepts presented with different terminology). This book - Beyond Games and Scripts - is a collection of essays and other material from Berne, illuminating some pieces of his body of work and revealing something of Berne himself. I recommend it for anyone who has read and appreciated "Games People Play," "What do you say after you say hello", or other work by Eric Berne or his disciple Claude Steiner ("Games Alcoholics Play", "Scripts People Live", etc). Note that one popular TA book, "I'm OK, You're OK", was written by Thomas Harris - who later was viewed as something of an apostate by Berne and Steiner.

Strict Freudians tend to write Berne off as hopelessly trivial; perhaps his unconventional lay-person-centered terminology and his desire to avoid pretention and obfuscation at all costs causes Freudians to protest that things can never be as simple as Berne portrays. However, it's fair to say that a large number of current non-Freudian psychotherapists make at least occasional use of Berne's theories and terminology, even if their specialties are within different schools. For individuals seeking their own psychological insights, I would recommend Berne and Steiner right along with Bradshaw, Dyer, and Chopra.

I am not a psychologist, but I have studied several schools for decades. I find the work of Eric Berne to be absolutely brilliant because of the hands-on quality it contains for the layman in the areas of comprehension and also self-help.
For me personally, it describes the subtleties of human behavior with a beautifully detached , but compassionate attitude.

The expert compilers of this particular book obviously had a plan to publish parts of Berne's works that give a clear view of the development of his practical theories . It is sensitively edited and presented . Since I have not read it to the end yet, nor am I a practicing psychologist. These remarks are purely my own educated views.
Please read them in that spirit..

Great stuff. Being a traditionalist when it comes to therapy, I'd do anything to go back to the days when almost every professional had an analyst with whom they could discuss the existential stuff that makes life more meaningful. And it's this kind of therapy that attracted intellectually gifted practitioners and clients alike to the therapy process.
