On the surface, Lübeck: A Wonderful Moment in Time may seem like just another army memoir, but aside from the 120 photos, it is actually about dealing with life, love, and the pursuit of happiness in a strange and foreign land - post war West Germany. This book started out being a history of my truly unique and proud Army Security Agency detachment, the Lübeckers, but I found I wasn't an historian; all I know for sure is what happened to me. Well, at least reasonably sure. That's what this book is all about - plus anecdotes and tales from other Lübeckers who were more frisky and fearless than I was.

On the surface, Lübeck: A Wonderful Moment in Time may seem like just another army memoir, but aside from the 120 photos, it is actually about dealing with life, love, and the pursuit of happiness in a strange and foreign land - post war West Germany. The nasty edginess of the cold war was still in full bloom, and so were a multitude of eager young fräulinen seeking their way to the promised land, the United States. Thankfully.

I actually read this book a few years ago, and was recently reminded of it while reading another ASA book, VOICES UNDER BERLIN. Don Johnson's eloquent paean to being young and far from home in the service of his country should strike a familiar chord with any ex-GI, but will ring particularly true with veterans of the Army Security Agency. I did my time in Germany too, and I could certainly relate. Don's tales of work (chasing dits and foreign phrases) and play (chasing women and adventure) and his and his friends' scrapes w/ authority are probably universal kinds of experiences for most ASA vets. And the numerous photos and mini-memoirs from other Lubeckers from the 50s and 60s are all added value to what was indeed "a wonderful moment in time." Good job, Don. Thank you for remembering it all and sharing it with us. - Tim Bazzett, author of Soldier Boy: At Play in the ASA

While reading this book, I felt I was there in Lubeck. I was able to picture places and people in my mind. It was a pleasant surprise to find out what the book was really about, a young man coming of age in a very special place and in a very different way than most. I think a lot of us reminisce about those years in our lives, mostly in our own thoughts, but for it to mean so much to someone that they would do the research, find the people and write the book to share with others is pretty remarkable, and even brave. I truly enjoyed this book!

Another interesting memoir of growing up in the Army Security Agency, a class of books of which there are far too few. This one covers the late 1950s and early 1960s in Lübeck. While Lübeck, unfortunately, closed before I got to Germany, the stories in the book have a feeling of familiarity about them that reminds me of other ASA border sites, like Schneeberg, Hoherbogen, Wobeck and Gartow, some of which I visited, and some of which I only know from "war stories" told over a beer or two or three. I'll never forget that cheeseburger with goat's cheese that I had at Hoherbogen.

This book is from a time before the Army figured out how to get us all back closer to the flag pole, so that they could keep our hair cut, our shoes shined, our initiative down, and our FTA levels up. It never was as much fun once that happened.

My personal arsenal of war stories is now shored up against all those doubting Thomases who say "you're making this stuff up," when I talk about the GUHORs (essentially a SIGINT collectors' strike) and Christmas greetings from the target. Lübeck has an example of each. If it's in print, it's got to be true. Right?

Not just for Lübeckers, but for all those ASA-ers who worked on the border and lived in a Gasthaus. ASA Lives!
