As she masters the seamstress's art, her life seems to be clearly mapped out - until she falls passionately in love and flees with her seductive lover. But in Morocco she is betrayed and left penniless. As civil war engulfs Spain, Sira finds she cannot return and so turns to her one true skill - and sews beautiful clothes for the expat elite and their German friends. With Europe rumbling towards war, Sira is lured back to Franco's Nazis-friendly Spain. She is drawn into the shadowy world of espionage, rife with love, intrigue and betrayal. And where the greatest danger lies.

In the middle of all this is Sira, a talented seamstress who finds herself in the unenviable position of spying for the British I, in some small degree, ruined this book for myself by reading another book also set in Morocco at the same time. TTIB deserves to be read singularly. It provides for the reader a wonderfully insightful look at Spain and Morocco in the 1930s, setting in place events regarding the involvement of the Germans as they struggled to influence the Spanish government.

Maria Duenas' million copy best-selling tale of adventure, tragedy, love and war, "The Seamstress". Spain, on the brink of civil war, 1936. In love for the first time, Sira Quiroga leaves Madrid, along with everything she knows and cares about, to run away to Tangiers, Morocco with her lover Ramiro. She entrusts him with all her inheritance only to be left by him - pregnant, penniless and in trouble with the authorities. At her lowest ebb Sira falls back on the one skill she possesses: sewing. Moving to Tetouan, Sira survives by sewing beautiful clothes for the English mistress of one of the most powerful men in Morocco and for her German friends. As the women unguardedly gossip about their husbands and lovers, Sira is placed in a position very valuable to the British secret service, and she is soon forced to move to Madrid where great danger lies. A grand and epic story that tells the story of Spain's civil war, Madrid in the Second World War and reveals a world of war, glamour, espionage and passion. "A wonderful novel with intrigue, love, mystery and tender, audacious and clean-cut characters". (Mario Vargas Llosa). "A magnificent novel that flawlessly brings together history and intrigue". The rating is for the write up of this product, not the actual book. I bought this not knowing it was rereleased in the US Under another title (the time in between). So I bought two copies of the same book, and I gave this copy away. I thought this book by the same author was about her mother, the original seamstress. doh!!

Through the character of a poor madridlenian seamstress Maria Duenas conjures up a wonderful story that takes the reader from war-torn Madrid to the Spanish Protectorate in Tetuan, back to Madrid post-war , and to Lisbon.

Sira Quiroga, the main character, leaves Madrid with her lover only to be abandoned, pregnant and penniless in Tangiers but rebuilds her life in Tetuan as a skilled seamstress providing haut couture to expatriates and the German community. Slowly she is drawn into the world of British espionage as they try to maintain the neutrality of Spain against an increasingly powerful German influence. Sira with her contacts to high society in Madrid and her German customers, at considerable risk to herself, becomes actively involved in providing detailed information to the head of British Intelligence in Madrid.

Much of the book draws on detail from the life of Rosalinda Fox and the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Juan Luis Beigbeder and the author successfully weaves a mix of fact and fiction to create a fascinating story.

The background to this book is a fascinating aspect of World War II, life in Franco's Spain (and Morocco) during the late 30s and early 40s, with British and German spies and diplomats mixing freely in this virtually neutral country. We follow Sira, a seamstress, who through a series of accidents, finds herself at the centre of this intrigue. Most of the characters in the novel are real, though I believe Sira herself is imagined, and the book is based around real incidents. Sira is a remarkable character, whose survival skills often have the reader sitting on the edge of their seats. The novel is built around a series of episodes, each of which maintained my interest, but it sagged somewhat as we moved from one episode to the next ; it almost reads like a TV mini-series. Lots of action at the end, though I was left with the feeling that Sira's scrapes with death were becoming a little contrived.

For anyone who is interested in Spain, especially during the Spanish Civil War and immediately afterward, this book is fascinating. The translation of the first two chapters was excellent. Later chapters are all right, but not quite as flowing and spot on with the English. The description of the young woman in love is extremely well done and captivating. The second section on her life in Tetouan is also very interesting. The third section on her life in Madrid is not quite as personal and intriguing, but in the fourth part, when she goes to Portugal, it picks up again.
I am reading this book aloud to my husband, and he also likes the book very much, which is a plus, because his interests are quite different from mine. My book club is going to discuss this book in a couple of months, and I think it is a fine book for discussion. I will recommend this one to all my friends.

If you are a fan of history based novels, this book is a perfect choice. The plot is set to Morocco and the Pyrenean Peninsula during the Spanish Civil War followed by World War II. On the example of a humble seamstress and her disturbed life it sheds a light on the historical circumstances and encourages you to research them more thoroughly on your own. I liked the opportunity to learn something new and simultaneously to read about a plausible life adventure with a lovestory incorporated.

I don't usually like reading books that have been translated from their original language to English - but this is such a seamless translation that I didn't feel that it had written in Spanish.
Interesting story with the Spanish Civil War circa 1936 as a backdrop. The main character was well-developed but I found it hard to empathize with her. However, there was enough action in the book to keep me engaged and want to discover what happened in the end. A good beach read.

The depth of this book is absolutely wonderful. Another gripping story would be well received. We hung onto every word.
This is an outstanding historical novel, but it is the same book as "The Time in Between". The novel deserves an A+++
