Engine fires and the dispersing energy of warp wake flickered across the depths of the crystal sphere which hung in the high dome of the Sycorax’s bridge.

Engine fires and the dispersing energy of warp wake flickered across the depths of the crystal sphere which hung in the high dome of the Sycorax’s bridge the view widened, pulling back until the Sycorax was just one island of light amongst many. Beyond them a single star burned bright against the distant void. It was not a large star, but seen from the edge of the system it was clear and bright. Like a candle, thought Ahriman. A lone flame to guide the lost through a storm-lashed night.

PAPERBACK NOVEL
Reviews about Sorcerer (2):
Zeus Wooden
Movie novelizations, even back during their glory days before home media, were not exactly high-brow material. They at least had a point unlike novelizations today, but the ratio of bad-to-good was still fairly wide back when even low budget films like "The Boogens" and "Day of the Animals" got the paperback treatment. "Sorcerer" by John Minihan is one of the better ones I've read.

The key to a novelization's success relies on how well it expands upon the script and, obviously, how well it is written. Minihan nails both of these qualities flawlessly; his handling of the introductory chapters for each character, for instance, are quick, simple and judiciously uses violence to punctuate the story.

What makes this book worth reading is that it fills in blanks where Friedkin dropped the narrative ball in his film. The scene where the men test drive the truck is explained and the whole scene turns into a very tense series of trials for the characters. The book, honestly, is far better than the movie because Minihan keeps the tension flowing through each scene without the benefits of strong photography or Tangerine Dream's haunting score.

I read the book before seeing the movie and I'd suggest anyone interested do the same. The movie's a fine piece of work, but the book simply outdoes it thanks to a better, more fleshed out story.

A very underrated sleeper hit.
