Dangerous Intimacy, Christopher Brooks and Christopher Coleman offer a collection of unscripted autobiographies of ten African American men, who are living with HIV. They have captured aspects of their lives from childhood on, illustrating the factors contributing to their becoming HIV+. They also sought to have the reader hear the stories in their words, as they were told to them. More than twenty men in different parts of the country were interviewed, with ten stories being selected. To preserve their anonymity, identities and geographical locations have been disguised. Dangerous Intimacy underlines two issues. First, it is time to recognize that HIV/AIDS is present, and growing, in the African American community. Second, we need to understand that a diagnosis of HIV is not a death sentence. All of the men whose stories are told has managed or handled the virus and is living a full life. Each story is unique, yet all share a common experience. They are African American and live with HIV/AIDS. The stories told in Dangerous Intimacy are a sobering reminder of the dangers of intimacy, unprotected sex, and uncontrolled and sometimes reckless behavior. Some readers will find them disturbing, even shocking. Others will see the struggle to overcome HIV and transform lives, inspiring. The men represent a rich diversity of the African American experience. One is a grandfather who grew up in segregated Chicago; another is a Viet Nam veteran. Others are fathers, married and single. They participated in this undertaking because they want us to hear their voices. Roque Florio captures the book s soul; He said, I wanted to write my own book before I die, but I believe this may be the closest that I will come to doing so, I don t fret about it though. If my story will help somebody, then my living will not have been in vain.
Reviews about DANGEROUS INTIMACY: Ten African American Men with HIV (6):

It was interesting to hear the different stories of the men and how they got HIV. They let you into their lives by detailing their childhood through adulthood and intimate details of their drug and sexual abuse. It was an interesting read as well as informative. It gave insight on how they are able to live their lives with the virus. There were questions after each gentleman's story which I did not read after the first one. I believed that was more for in-depth discussions if you were reading this book as a group.

For once a book that tells the story that is rarely told -- the other side. Dangerous Intimacy is the biographies of Ten African-American men. Each man has his own unique story to tell and yet, they all have something in common. They are living with HIV/AIDS, have been for many years and are proof that with the right care life does not have to come to a standstill. All of the men are productive members of society who are giving back to their communities. Each one when faced when the knowledge that he has contracted this life threatening disease handles it differently. Their stories are compelling and find a malleable audience clamoring for more information. If, like me, you had unanswered questions about HIV this book will certainly help to clear them up. The book will be a valuable tool in both the classrooms and homes because of the discussion questions located at the end of each chapter.

Finally getting down to review this heart wrenching book about the lives and struggles of ten men of color. The book winds around the intimate and private plights that lead to these men acquiring an illness that awaken them to the possibilities of a full life. They, individually and collectively find ways to attempt to put their lives and families back on a path of healing and completeness. The story is told in a first person method that grabs intestinally and plummets you on the roller coaster ride with these trouble souls.

A must read for anyone within the social and behavioral health field. It is a good reminder of why many originally of us felt called to do this work.

This book kills all of the stereotypes about this misunderstood disease of HIV. Reading the stories of each one of these individuals has opened my mind to the personal struggle of having to not only cope with this sickness, But also having to cope with today's society. Reading about what they sacrificed and what they accomplished while learning to live their lives. As a Black man living in these modern times of Drug use and unprotected sex, I felt compelled to purchase this Gritty, truth telling hold nothing back book. The stories within these pages will take you on a nonstop rollercoaster ride into a world unlike any other. A MUST BUY !!!!!

This book is an electric exhibit of 10 very different men with one serious diagnosis in common. The editors have managed to eloquently connect the stories, using the non-sterile language of the storytellers without stripping the men of their individuality. The format is brief, but thorough, leaving the reader hanging on to every word. The book is enlightening and empowering offering hope and clarity to a complicated subject. Discussion Questions are included and may be used as tools to enhance the reading experience.

I've never read such a depressing book. It just portrays a negative views of African Americans in today's culture. AIDS is a serious problem, but not only with gays and not only with blacks. It's a disease that doesn't discriminate, it crosses borders and has killed millions of people. I don't know what these two authors were thinking writing such a book in such a way that portrays African Americans in such a negative way. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
