If you have read Steven M.R. Covey's book, "The Speed of Trust" you already know the benefits of not having to pay the "trust tax." According to Covey, building a culture of trust requires two essential ingredients: 1) Competence and 2) Character. While most successful companies have invested a great deal of time/money/effort in increasing the technical competency of their employees, few have taken such a sophisticated and strategic approach to developing a culture of character. The results of developing a highly competent workforce that lacks character is often the breeding ground for cynicism and negativity. Increasing competency without increasing character is much like adding horsepower to a car's engine (competency) without also upgrading the steering, brakes and tires (character). Making Character First provides leaders and managers a positive and realistic method to help cultivate and sustain a culture of character.

If you have a team of highly competent employees and want to increase efficiency and effectiveness, I would highly recommend this book to you. Adding additional technical competency will provide some benefit but adding to your team's understanding of character could provide incredible and lasting results. Tom Hill's, "Making Character First" is the missing component for organizations seeking to take their companies to the next level.

Having known Tom Hill for many years as a friend and having been his pastor as well, the title of his book Making Character First sums up the theme of Tom's life. Tom has earned my admiration for his intense persuit to develop the right character in his own life. The book itself is a wonderful presentation of how leaders can change the culture of their organizations by motivating those they lead to pursue Character First. It is very practical. The personal stories and illustrations are easy to follow. I consider this book to be a must read for all leaders.

My husband I and found the information in this book excellent. As Christians, we were able to find many scripture verses to support the qualities discussed in the book and use it to teach self-esteem and life skill classes, as well as righteous Christian living.

"Making Character First" is a personal story of a successful company and a step by step guide to help you implement character training and development in your organization. And it works!
However, as a mother of eight, I've found these principles to be effective in parenting, as well.
Reading this book and hearing the author speak on many occasions, has taught me how to praise my children for character, how to motivate them to good character, how to teach them what character is, and how to help them choose friends who have good character, as well.
This book is an interesting, enjoyable read. It will challenge you to evaluate your own personal character and teach you how to help those under your authority develop qualities like deference, kindness, attentiveness, etc. This book will be useful in your company or organization - but it's also a great resource for the home!

Good read! Good for business owner to read and apply in their businesses.
Tom Hill tells a great story of how the properly training of employees in character can change the outlook and production on any company. His principles are easily applicable to schools and families. The chapter on praising for character as oppposed to actions is eye-opening as I deal with my own children. I would recommend this book for any leader: be it employer, teacher, or parent.
