If you are thinking of owning a company, have a company that's really small or if you do all the income producing work you NEED to read this. It was written in 1986 and it's as if he knows me and my company intimately. It's eery.

For those of you who are successful entrepreneurs this isn't for you.

It's for the guy or girl who is a dynamo at their job who thinks or thought running a business was going to be basically the same. It's not and read the book to find out.

Great book, worth reading it. The information provided is simple yet very important. If you have never ran a business before you must read this.

As a management consultant for small businesses, I find the lack of fundamental business organizational knowledge among the entrepreneurs I work with is their biggest obstacle to success. This book explains the basic organizational thinking that will help get all the bases covered by the right people, both employees and outside sources, and will help avoid the problems that kill or hold back small business. Highly recommended!

Apparently this is a "classic" for entrepreneurs. The first half is a bit tedious. The author has a vaguely-goofy theory about the "types" of people who start businesses, and he spends a lot of time telling you that he's going to expose some great revelation (any minute now), only to launch another chapter about his theories which, again, ends with "in just a minute I'll tell you some great stuff." But I understand he's addressing a very wide audience. Still, I nearly tossed the book, and it would have been a shame because part two is where the filler ends and the valuable content begins.

Ultimately it's well worth the money, and it's a shame that it isn't in print any more. Even though it was written decades ago, and long before the Internet made everyone decide to be an entrepreneur, his insights are valuable for all types of companies...

I love his writtings.

I've lived this, and Gerber is spot on for the first 60 - 70% of the book. It falls just short of giving needed advice to fix a small business in disarray though.

Excellent book for the entrepreneur
The earlier editions of this work are best. I quote from this book all the time. The author really crystallize what to avoid as a biz owner and what to replicate!
