Series: Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues. I read it straight through and I'm neither a teacher nor a student.

Series: Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues. The opening chapters on how beef, chicken, pork processing works is fairly graphic, but if you are reading this far, you're probably already familiar with the general nature of processing. It's no less disturbing for being familiar, and you'd think that anyone who knows what goes on in one of these plants would be an avowed vegetarian.

Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues. The writing is kind of dry, and filled with statistics and comparison tables. This book seems to have been written - and should be marketed for - various college courses and students focusing on sociology. Darcia, May 10, 2012.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE BLUES: THE MEAT AND POULTRY INDUSTRY IN NORTH AMERICA draws on more than 15 years of research by the authors, a cultural anthropologist and a social geographer, to present a detailed look at the meat and poultry industry in the United States and Canada. Following chapters on today's beef, poultry, and pork industries, SLAUGHTERHOUSE BLUES examines industry impacts on workers and on the communities that host its plants. The book details the authors' efforts to help communities plan for and mitigate the negative consequences of meat and poultry plants as well as community opposition to confined animal feeding operations. The book concludes by exploring alternatives to North America's model of industrialized meat production.
Reviews about Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat and Poultry Industry in North America (Case Studies on Contemporary Social Issues) (6):

A really excellent sociological and anthropological look at the meatpacking industry. Brief, easy to read, and relevant. My only real complaint is that Stull and Broadway's analysis lacks any consideration of feminist issues -- they mention that domestic violence becomes the number one reported crime in communities where the livestock industry builds plants, and then fail to address women's issues in their four recommendations for communities affected by the industry. Although this is a serious oversight, I still think this is one of the best texts available on the subject, and I highly recommend it.

This book turned me vegetarian (and vegan for a while). I had this professor my first year in college and he is fantastic. The book is as well.

I haven't read this yet, but I'm getting it for Christmas, and it should be just as good as the other slaughterhouse books! Read it if you want to learn about how badly animals are treated inside slaughterhouses!
