Robert L. Heilbroner (March 24, 1919 – January 4, 2005) was an American economist and historian of economic thought.

Robert L. The author of some 20 books, Heilbroner was best known for The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers (1953), a survey of the lives and contributions of famous economists, notably Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Maynard Keynes.

Now the book: With an exquisite, elegant and appealing style, Robert Heilbroner goes along three centuries or so in which economics has lived with us in the modern sense of the word. Never before the world had seen something like this. That's why Adam Smith wrote "An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations" on 1776 and not before.

Robert Heilbroner offers here a compendium of readings from the 'worldly philosophers' themselves. Heilbroner's elemental approach makes this book a must-read for students looking for foundation study in macroeconomics. Paperback: 368 pages. It is well written and concise, giving the reader a wonderful historical background in the progression of economic thinking since the beginnings of business and trade.

by Aaron Singer and Robert L. This text offers a combination of scholarship from an economist and a renowned American historian.

Robert Heilbroner, approaching Smith from the history of economic ideas, connected the issues of mercantilism and government intervention to Smith’s main theories. Smith, Heilbroner argued, led by his optimistic vision, saw no conflict between the interests of individual economic agents and the interests of society as a whole, since the interaction of private interests through competition leads to social harmony. The market, where economic agents operate, is self regulating through the laws of supply and demand.
