Practice-based evidence makes an important contribution to the field of evidence-based practice on which National Health Service (NHS) clinicians and patients base decisions about psychological treatment interventions that are most likely to be effective.

This practical guide to the Gestalt approach has successfully introduced thousands of trainee therapists to the essential skills needed in Gestalt practice. Now in its third edition, the book includes:

·          New chapters on working with trauma, and building client resources

·          New material on depression and anxiety

·          Expanded content on working with more challenging client issues

·          Integration of leading ideas from contemporary trauma therapies.

The authors offer practical guidance on the entire process of therapy including setting up the therapeutic session, creating a working alliance, assessment and treatment direction, managing risk, supervision, adopting a research approach, and managing difficult encounters.

I am currently getting my Master's degree and I am trying to figure out my theoretical orientation, so my friend recommended this book to me. This book has been TREMENDOUSLY helpful. It clearly explains the major concepts of Gestalt therapy, different experiments, how to conceptualize clients, etc. This was my first semester seeing actual clients (in practicum), so I carried this book with me everywhere I went. I now have a solid foundation in Gestalt after consulting with this text. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about Gestalt, especially counselors-in-training who are still trying to figure out their theoretical orientations and think they may have a desire for Gestalt therapy.

Excellent book for anyone interested in learning about using Gestalt techniques in therapy.

Clear, concise explanations on a wide range of topics. Very readable and accessible to trainees. 2013 edition very up to date. Great references for further reading. I would recommend it to all Gestalt training organizations.

An excellent resource! I highly recommend it.

Great book for first time 'Gestalters.' Goes all the way from setting up your office to examples of sessions and real life self examination exercises. A little short on detailed theory, but an excellent referred reading list. It's a good book for all levels of Gestalt practice. Can be used by beginners as a great primer for beginning the wonderful world of Gestalt therapy. Seasoned practitioners get a look at the changes in definitions and trends in the field. Long time 'Gestalters' may find it a little light and not 'pure' as many other styles are integrated in the therapy process.

I didn't blink at paying $70+ for a textbook in grad school. Now that I'm out and STILL paying student loans, this was a leap of faith - and it didn't come near to university bookstore prices! However, it was worth the cost.

Excellent chapters on the following topics:
Phenomenology and Field Theory; Establishing the Therapeutic Relationship; Treatment Considerations; Experimenting; Unfinished Business; Transference and Counter-Transference; Body Process and Regression. Two chapters are especially helpful: Practice Issues addresses time-limited counseling, group work, dream work, and crisis interventions. Multicultural issues and spirituality (not to be confused with religious/pastoral counseling issues) was addressed in a chapter titled The Wider Field.

Excellent book and highly recommended.

If Gestalt therapy is for you something hard to understand (mainly because they didn't explain it all at your university), this book is for you. I had a course in Gestalt therapy for a year during my post-graduate studies in clinical psychology and I must admit I was able to FINALLY understand a lot of the concepts I learned there without really knowing what was my teacher talking about. The books offers lots of exercises for you to do so that you can actually perceive, with all your senses, what it is all about. The writers have also discussed a lot of techniques and skills for you to use with your clients. It was an eye opener for me as before I had thought that "bashing the cushion" and "two chairs" were basically the available "tangible" interventions.

The books is very ellegantly written and I only wish I had had it a few years ago... Highly recommended.
Good book on skills and theory. Nice addition to my Gestalt library.
