Reviews about Barron's GRE Psychology (Barron's: The Leader in Test Preparation) (7):

This book is primarily useful for giving a study outline, but the same can be achieved by reading an intro psych textbook. It lists terms and key figures with which/whom you should be familiar, but it doesn't give information about most of them. If you have forgotten these names since you took the pertinent course, you're out of luck. However, it frequently reiterates that you should be reviewing alongside a "good" intro psych book. If you do, in fact, have a good intro book, you actually don't need the Barron's book. You already have all the information the review book provides, plus the important details that the review book lacks.

For testing information, the introduction is confusing and somewhat misleading. For example, you are encouraged to answer as many questions as possible, even if guessing is required (as is necessary on the computer-based general GRE exam, which you have probably already taken and have come to expect). However, credit is taken off for wrong answers and not for blank responses. This appears to be a conflicting strategy.

In short, I would recommend just having a good intro psych book and skipping this altogether (Gazzaniga & Heatherton's "Psychological Science" is very comprehensive and probably suffices on its own as review). If you want a practice exam to follow your progress, go ahead and sign up with ETS and they will mail you a practice test (or find one online). Save your $$ and your time.

I just started using this book and wanted to point out a major error in the Diagnostic Test Score Evaluation.

On the Tally Chart, the subscore classifications for each questions are completely wrong. Each Diagnostic Test is grouped by subject, but these Tally Charts make the subjects appear randomly distributed across questions. This will lead to incorrect Evaluation of your Score and subscores. (Which was the whole point I bought this particular book - to evaluate my strong/weak areas for more focused studying)

OOPS!

There are probably more errors judging by other reviews, but this error affects the major efficacy of this particular tool, which is the unique appeal of the book.

I will give a more elaborate review once I complete the book/GRE test.

I am applying for clinical psychology doctoral programs and bought this book based on the reviews I read about it on Amazon to prepare for the GRE Psych exam. I did not major in psychology and was 1.5 years out of college when I started using the guide (just to give you some context of my starting place).

I found the book to be very helpful and well organized. I appreciated that there were two diagnotic exams to take along the study path to gauge your strengths and weaknesses. There is a fairly in-depth review in the book for quick reference on names, dates, research studies, and theories that proved to be very useful during my study. However, I noticed that a few questions were repeated in the exams offered in the book.

I would not recommend that one use only the study summary in this book for the sole means of preparation for the exam. The exam is so densely content-based that it would not be a good idea. Before I started using this study book, I reread an introductory psych textbook to refamiliarize myself with the concepts.

Those two methods helped prepare me well. I have yet to see my scores.

This book turned out to be a bit of a mixed bag. While no one should expect a subject GRE book to substitute a formal intro level textbook, this book did lack in detailed treatment of certain important sections. e.g Milgram's experiment is not given adequate coverage. But that being said I found this book PRETTY GOOD. It touches all the sections even though it may not go into the details. So if you know your concepts, this book will serve well to remind you. Don't expect to learn stuff from scratch out of this book. The sections on neuroscience and brain anatomy are very well covered. All in all, I don't regret having bought this. And if you have the time give Kaplan's Guide a quick look. Kaplan treats social psych sections better.

I really wanted to like this book, given the usefulness of Barron's General GRE book. However, this book fell far short of my expectations. For every section it says, "Be sure to have your intro books handy for review." I don't see the point in buying a book that tells me to read other books. On the other hand, the practice tests are useful if you have the time to run through all of them. My suggestion is to make this book the last one on your list of study aids.
