Hiram Houston Merritt Jr. (January 12, 1902, Wilmington, North Carolina – January 9, 1979 in Boston, Massachusetts) was one of the pre-eminent academic neurologists of his day. As the chair of the Neurological Institute of New York from 1948 to 1967, he oversaw the training of hundreds of neurologists; 35 of his former students have become chairs of academic neurology departments across the United States. He was also the dean of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1958 to 1970.
Unlike other neurology textbooks that either focus on neuroanatomy or clinical neurology, Clinical Neurology and Neuroanatomy integrates the two in manner which simulates the way neurologists learn, teach, and think. Clinical Neurology and Neuroanatomy is divided into two main sections.

A TEXTBOOK OF NEUROLOGY 4th edn. By H. Houston Merritt. This book is primarily concerned with the pattern-recognizing functions of the nervous system. Pp. xx + 844; 198 figures, 146 tables. Henry Kimpton: London. It is evident from the first few chapters that the book is intended for aspiring bioengineers trained in the physical sciences. For example, complex numbers are introduced in both the exponential and the polar form without any explanation of the concepts involved. One is therefore inclined to ask what impression of the nervous system the engineer will gain from reading this book.
