The treatment and procedure oriented focus has been enhanced through the use of more charts, tables and algorithms. The unique style of step-by-step diagnostic and procedural instruction is maintained throughout. Included in the 73 additional chapters is an important section on acid-base assessment which emphasizes the use of the biochemical profile in assessing the acid-base condition. Venous and arterial blood gas analysis and all electrolyte abnormalities are also discussed. Four chapters are also included on emergency care of ferrets, rabbits, birds and reptiles.

I used this book quite a bit in a 3rd year class working up small animal cases. I'm not a small animal person by any means and this text has some good reference information that helps me out when I'm looking at dogs and cats. I wouldn't pay a fortune for it, but it's a good reference to have in the library.

I have used this book extensively in my private practice internship, where seeing emergency cases is common. I have used other emergency texts such as Plunkett and Silverstein/Hopper, but this is the only one that tells me what I need to be DOING in a sequential fashion. There are useful formulas and recipes (how to create CRI's, calculate osmolality, make a diluted epinephrine solution, etc.) There is little information on prognosis, client communication, etc, but the meat of what you should be ordering and monitoring for is listed. I plan on bringing this book with me wherever I go.

This book is essential to the practice of emergency veterinary medicine. It is thorough and in depth description of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures is unmatched in the profession. I constantly refer to it in my practice for some of the more intricate and difficult therapies.

This book has proven, time and time again, to be my best "go-to" book for an emergency situation. First of all, genius to make it yellow, as it stands out on the shelf. Secondly, the rest of the book seems to have been as thoughtfully put together. It has easy-to-read, important highlighted areas, for during the emergency. It also has fairly in depth info as well, for once the animal is stabilized. It has CRI info and a great guide for what to put in your crash cart. I have two other emergency books, but this is, by far, my favorite.
