Fred J. Alsop is known for his work on Birds of New England, America's Backyard Birds, Birds of North America, and Habitat Partitioning and Niche Overlap of Two Forest Thrushes in the Southern Appalachian Spruce-Fir Forests. The cover and pages are of high quality, the illustrations are beautiful, and there's that overall feeling of "substance" when you hold it (all book lovers know that feeling I'm referring to). But be advised, this is a handbook, NOT a field guide.

I have identified more birds with this book than with the other numerous field guides I own. It's lightweight and slips easily into a bag, or sits on the windowsill for identification on-the-fly, so to speak. Would love it if the author compiled photographs of females and young of the species, as well as the males. It is a beautiful book with an excellent format - sharp colorful pictures, useful information, and a record keeping section. I would keep it by my kitchen window!

I bought this one as a Christmas present for a friend who has really enjoyed the one that I have. It's been perfect for my southwest Iowa area, and I have had a few strange birds that I had not seen before identified by it. It's well worth the money and handy to carry with you or set on the table to grab quickly.

I bought this book for myself many years ago. Recently a neighbor started watching the birds and didn't know what species he was looking at SO I bought him this book. They like it very much also. It gives great pictures and more information on two pages than most other books. I would recommend this book to any Southern bird watcher.

too much information, I wanted more pictures. I am still unable to identify all my birds in my back yard

I use this little pocket book all the time. It has all the information I want at nesting time in the spring.

I have identified more birds with this book than with the other numerous field guides I own. It's lightweight and slips easily into a bag, or sits on the windowsill for identification on-the-fly, so to speak. I only wish companion guides for insects, trees or other regions were available. Would love it if the author compiled photographs of females and young of the species, as well as the males. Descriptions of females and young are excellent, though.

I first saw this book at the Cradle of Forrestry in Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. It is a beautiful book with an excellent format - sharp colorful pictures, useful information, and a record keeping section. I wish there was an edition for northeastern birds. I would keep it by my kitchen window!
