This story of the efforts of the National Audubon Society and the US Government, to stop the decline and increase the number of birds is almost a case-history of all the difficulties involved in trying to save a vanishing species, and they seldom all occur in one instance. It is the story of Walsh's first capture, a half-starved three-fingered sloth who, when released, fled in slow motion panic up the nearest tree...of a pygmy anteater whose unaccountable hostility was explained when, the night of its rescue, it gave birth to 'a single, thimble-size, hairless, big-nosed replica' of itself...of the anaconda which initiated a hair-raising wrestling match. But, above all it is an amazing adventure tale about the nick-of-time rescue of 10,000 helpless creatures - armadillos, tortoises, sloths, anteaters, opossums, giant snakes, kinkajous, tapirs, ocelots, and dozens of other species...."

I first read this book fifty years ago. It's as good now as it was then.

TISATWR is the story of rescuing wildlife from the rising waters behind a new dam. John Walsh takes you along as they gather the animals from trees and surrounded hills. It's a fascinating story and eminently readable.

My husband got this for my 13 year old son to read because he remembered reading it as a kid. My son loved it, and we all enjoyed it.

Read this many decades ago, but just used the title to emphasize a deadline in a business deal. One of those books that will stay with you. (Another is also available on Amazon--Hans Reusch--Top of the World). This is really a heartwarming book from a time when things seemed simpler and more clear cut. It is a form of heroism and clear cut decency that is hard to find these days. A great book for young teens. Glad it is still available.

An entertaining read that reminds me of the style of the Jacques Cousteau books of the same time period. the author makes no pretences to have extensive knowledge of Suriname and writes to what he knows (zoology). He's no armchair anthropologist.

I found this refreshing since most books on Suriname only address cultural aspects.

If you're planning a first trip to Suriname there are probably better resources of information, but if you are interested in the premise alone, or have been to the big lake at Afobaka this is a great book.
