Great book for the subject. I recommend it to anyone who has had someone show them a piece of wood and asked them what they think it is. Be aware that the emphasis is upon American woods, particularly those from the eastern United States, although some cultivated species and western N.A. species are included. The techniques are applicable to any wood sample from throughout the world, though you would have to find or create your own reference specimen in this case. Great images.

I bought this book because I was Harold A. Core's secretary during World War II when he was a 1st Lt. at Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation, Newport News, Va. Interesting that he was promoted to Colonel and received a Ph. D. in Forestry. He was very nice and handsome too. We went to over 100 meetings together processing civilians into Officers in the Army. I took the notes in shorthand and transcribed them.

I am a graduate student in Dept. of Wood Industry, NPUST in Taiwan. My major is in wood ultrastructure and electron microscopy. This book is written by Dr. H. C. Core, Dr. A. C. Day and Dr. Cote, they are all professor in wood structure in NC State University, especially Dr. Cote. To get a great EM picture is very difficult, but in this book we can find so many beautiful EM pictures, and let us know a different "small" world! I'm very love this book, and I always want to buy it, but it was out of print.
